The Isolated Perfused Mammalian Heart

The isolated perfused heart is a useful preparation both for teaching physiology and pharmacology and for research. It has the advantage that several cardiovascular parameters may be monitored simultaneously for example:

The preparation first described by Langendorff in 1895 and subsequently modified and improved by many other workers is the most widely used.

This program uses data derived from real experiments to teach by investigation the pharmacological effect of a wide range of drugs and ions on the preparation. It may also be used to illustrate the effects of increasing preload on ventricular force (Starling's Law of the heart).
